Instructions for setting up the PC speaker driver: After downloading speak.exe, use File Manager to put it in a directory by itself. If you don't have a directory for this purpose, create one. Don't use c:\temp, though, because Windows may use that one for another purpose. Use c:\install. After moving it to the install directory, double click speak.exe to expand the compressed files. The screen will go black and quickly expand the files and return to File Manager. If it doesn't look like anything happened, you can press F5 (refresh) and the expanded files will show. - Start Control Panel - Click the Drivers icon - Click Add - Select "Unlisted or Updated Driver" - Click OK - Type the path to where your uncompressed speak.exe is (i.e. c:\install) - Click OK - Click Setup - Do not enable interrupts during playback (if you do, your computer may sound like a sick animal) - Click OK when finished. You're all set. You can now delete the files in the temporary directory. You can save the temporary directory for the next time you need to install something. To change the sounds associated with certain Windows events, click the Sound icon in Control Panel and follow the instructions there. To add sound choices, put additional .wav files in your Windows directory and they will appear the next time you bring up that list. You can also double-click a .wav file in File Manager to play it with the Sound Recorder. How well this works is largely hardware dependant. I've used it on several different machines and some sound a lot better than others. Also, some sounds work better than others. Experiment with it. I've always been able to find a better sound than the default beep! You might want to keep event sounds short, though, since your machine has to wait for them to finish playing before it can go on to the next thing!
